Hellooo friends! I have great piece of news to share with you. I have moved from a free wordpress site to a self-hosted domain. After months of reading about it, checking with other blogger friends, I could finally make the shift. Again, it was the blogging community which helped me with the shift. The domain and free hosting for a year is gifted by Jaibala. Thank you so much Jai. Without you, I would have taken forever to hop on to self-hosting.
Jaibala and Sid have helped me with the migration hiccups I faced. They gently nudged me in the right direction and I found my way. A big thank you also to my brother Manoj who helped me with the set up.
For those thinking whether or not to move to self-hosting, my recommendation is please do move. You do not know what you are missing. The world of self-hosting is completely different from the free wordpress site which allows us very limited and restricted movements.
Here are a few things I learnt in the process which were my apprehensions too –
- You do not need to know a lot of technical stuff or even programming. Everything (atleast 95% of it) is drag and drop features.
- It just takes a couple of dedicated days to setup your website.
- You can transfer existing followers to the self-hosted site. So, you do not lose any followers.
- You can transfer all your existing posts, pages, including likes and comments.
- WordPress.org has a great repertoire of support pages. I could find all support from the website including code snippets.
I will no longer be managing my other two wordpress blogs – kaapitimes.wordpress.com and booksdrama.wordpress.com. I have combined the contents of both the blogs into www.kaapitimes.com.
A few lessons were learnt there too. With two blogs, the focus gets divided. So, though you may be posting more, it is never enough. Even the visitors to the blog gets divided. As a result, both blogs lose their ratings. So, decided to do away with the two blogs.
Booksdrama.wordpress.com had been alive for a couple of months only, but it had picked up well. I will retain the @booksdrama twitter handle to post about books.
Someone picked up my @kaapitimes twitter handle, the day my domain was registered. Co-incidence? Someone is squatting on it with 5 tweets and no followers. So, please get your twitter handles before domain is registered.
Did I say that I completely enjoyed the migration process? After many years, I enjoyed doing something technical. I loved to put in some code too. I realised that though I have different aspirations, but in my heart, I am still a programmer.
So, go on, enjoy your kaapi and explore the brand new site. Give me feedback. If something is not working, do let me know so I can fix it.
Thank you and have a great week ahead!
