He greeted her with a cheerful ‘Hi! How was the day?’
She smiled back and entered the house. She put her bags aside, kicked off her pumps and walked over to the washroom. She splashed water on her face, washed her hands and feet. Sameer followed her around and repeated the question, ‘How was your day?’
‘Good. How else would it be?’ pat came the reply.
‘Ok. Do you want to have dinner now? I will set up the table.’
‘Let it be. Let’s eat in the kitchen,’ she called back from the bedroom where she changed into comfortable clothes.
Sameer set up the table with steaming hot food. Dia joined in after few minutes. Sameer turned her to face him.
‘What’s the matter? You are upset,’ he said.
‘No. I am fine,’ she said and looked away.
Sameer turned her face to him again. ‘Look at me,’ he said, ‘You are upset. I can make it from the quiver in your voice. Tell me about it.’
It opened a floodgate of tears for Dia. ‘Sameer…. I .. erred in a.. program.. my lead… was.. upset. I cannot believe.. I made an error.’
She went on in fits and starts. Sameer listened to her making the appropriate ‘Yes’ ‘Ok’ and even laughing.
At night, Dia turned to the sleeping Sameer and said ‘What would I do without you?’
Sameer said ‘Hmm.. Imagine what I would have done without you. I am sure it would have been more fun.’
