And I am back

After being away from my website for two weeks,  I am back.  Hope you all missed me.  I was expecting some downtime,  but two weeks were really not as per my plans.  But such is life.  The best laid plans went for a toss.  Plan A, Plan B and Plan C failed too.

I moved my web hosting and domain from GoDaddy to Bluehost.  I was happy with my account in Godaddy.  But, towards the end of the year,  it started to give me technical problems.  As the website grew,  there was a space crunch on the hosting and there was nothing much I could do about it.  This led to frequent down times, delays in loading the website and sometimes,  I was not at all able to open the website.  I heard the feedback from a lot of you too on the slowness of the website.  I changed the webdesign to remove many plugins and widgets, cache savers,  but all were useless.

So, moved to Bluehost which is the preferred choice among many of my blogger friends.

The actual transfer of data was a nightmare as the Godaddy Cpanel was inaccessible.  I had taken multiple backups of database, FTP’d the files and also used WP Export plugin. I had read every website which gave suggestions on how to move hosting from Godaddy to Bluehost.   The last weekend, I spent all my time trying to move the files, but to no avail.  I finally gave up on Sunday evening.  I thought of reaching out to my blogger friends for technical help on Monday.

Then I remembered that the last time I had transferred data from to the website, it was a simple process.  I decided to try the same.  I used the WP Export generated file to import it on my site.  Then exported it from there to the new website.  And lo! it worked.  The process took me less than 15 minutes.  All the files, comments, followers, views were updated.  All except images and ‘featured images’.   But,  it was a Monday and work commitments, Onam and a health scare for the husband kept me away from the website.

This weekend was spent in finding a suitable theme and customising it.  The website is not yet looking 100% the way I want it.  I am still working on it.  But, go ahead. Try it.  Tell me what is working and what is not working.  Especially, does it load fast on the desktop, mobile or tab.  It will help me a lot when making changes.

  1. I used to be with GoDaddy and it was a ROYAL pain moving out of there. I would never recommend it to anyone, especially if you’re doing stuff on your own. I moved mine over to Namecheap and haven’t had any problems. My blog is on Squarespace. They now have their own domains now so everything can be housed under one roof but they aren’t accepting transfers yet. I clicked over from Monday Musings because I was intrigued by your blog name. Nice to meet you!

    1. Welcome Kenya and nice to meet you too. So far, I am happy with Bluehost. I am technically savvy but only to a limited extent. Too much and I give up. 🙂 See you around.

  2. Wow that’s a lot of hassle… You have lots of patience… The mere thought of moving to self hosted site is giving me nightmares… I am just planning to get a domain name for my personal blog. I remember your site being slow earlier. Glad everything worked out. I opened your site on my mobile so can’t see thr actualchange. Will check from laptop from home.

    1. Thanks Rajlakshmi. It was a hassle because there was no clear solution given on the websites. Everywhere there was lot of technical jargon. I had even mentally prepared myself to accept the data loss. Thankfully, not much was lost.

  3. I really liked the previous header image, so when the website loaded today I missed that image. I am glad the transition worked out fine. The post gives me a fair idea of which site to turn to for self-hosting.

    1. Ah yes.. that header image was really cheerful, bright and warm. I do miss that feel here. I am still tinkering with the theme. Thanks Anamika.

  4. Mine is also in GoDaddy. Since I haven’t blogged much this year I haven’t faced the space crunch issue yet. I do get emails from Jetpack once in every two weeks about the site went down for a couple of minutes or so. Since I don’t login much I am not aware of this if not for the generous Jetpack notifications. 🙂 Glad that you found a better option and fixed up all by yourself, Lata. Now I know whom to go to when I’m in trouble. 🙂

  5. Welcome back. I wanted to ping you today to ask, glad you got the website going. I’ve been on GoDaddy for 9 years and except for one hiccup – largely in part to my fidgeting, I’ve never had a problem. I have one site on BlueHost now and I honestly don’t like it. I hope you have better luck with BlueHost.

PS: Like the new theme. Looks good!

    1. Thanks Corinne. It took some time to get the blog up. I had no technical issues with GoDaddy. Just that the website was taking too long to load which was a common feedback despite having a very light theme with hardly any widgets. Bluehost also had better technical options like unlimited memory which is a constraint on Godaddy.

  6. I did miss you and you know I miss your fiction the most 🙂
But I am glad you back after dealing with your technical issues. The website looks good, is loading quickly and I like the changing posts. Sorry – don’t know what that is called 😉
Complex situations, simple solutions. Isn’t it?

    Good work there!

    1. Thanks Parul for missing my fiction. I am still working on the theme and it may change again. The changing posts are called ‘Featured Slider’ widget. It was included in the theme.

    1. Thanks Shalz. At one point, I did think I lost all my data and gave up. But I had to persist as the thought hurt a lot.

    1. Thanks for the feedback Mithila. I put in a different theme this time. I am still customizing and will make further changes.

  7. I am seeing it on mobile and it feels the same as before. Loads reasonably quickly. If you have issues with featured images and other images not showing then try disabling photon in Jetpack. That should help. Good work!

  8. Yes I did miss you!!! I did wonder where you were. Good to know you have solved your web hosting issues .
I too will be facing this problem soon when my hosting service is due for renewal. Right now it is WebHosting but perhaps I should change to Blue Host as so many people find it more efficient . But I will cross that bridge when I come to it

    1. So glad to know Sunita. I am following your American stories and they are so good. I will help with the technical stuff when you need. Don’t worry about it.

  9. Congrats Lata! Good that you made the move to BlueHost. I am still with GoDaddy for the domain name on one site. Will probably move that over to BlueHost in March next year. I can imagine the delay and stress. How is your husband now? Better?

    1. Thanks Shailaja. I moved my domain also to Bluehost. It was a smooth process. The husband is still recovering. But, much better than last week.
